Community Support & Development

Community development enables people to work collectively to bring about positive social change. This long term process starts from people’s own experience and enables communities, whether geographical, identity or interest, to work together to:

  • Identify their own needs and aspirations
  • Take collective action using their strengths and resources
  • Develop their confidence, skills and knowledge
  • Challenge unequal power relationships
  • Promote social justice, equality and inclusion
  • Improve the quality of their lives, their communities, and the groups to which they belong.

ABC promotes community development approaches and provides support and assistance for existing community groups and new or emerging groups in the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council area to help them address development, governance and sustainability issues.

It is vital that a group’s management committee understands the important role good governance plays in running a strong and legally compliant organisation. Good governance supports the day to day running of the organisation and helps build trust and confidence with the local community, other group Members, and funders.

Committees, particularly from newly-formed groups, may find it challenging to review the group’s governance arrangements, develop annual plans, review policies or complete funding applications.

ABC can help with all these areas. We can meet with your committee to arrange a governance health check to check that the committee has appropriate systems in place, and work together to identify areas for development.

No matter how small your group is, you need to be financially accountable to your members and funders. Accountability means being able to demonstrate that transactions are recorded, payments authorised and financial information is readily available. ABC can assist your group to improve its financial management, bringing transparency and confidence to your group’s members and external bodies.

ABC also provides assistance with charity registration and, for groups already registered, assists with the preparation of Annual Returns and Statutory Accounts.

If you are considering setting up a new group ABC can help with: developing the group’s governing document; establishing the management committee; opening a bank account; governance awareness training and drafting policies.

Fundraising is one of the most challenging areas of activity for groups. ABC regularly shares information about grants and funding opportunities. ABC’s assistance ranges from providing funding workshops to working with groups on a one-to-one basis. We are here to help guide groups through the funding application process, support groups as they manage their grant, and help prepare the final evaluation report.
